SharePod 3.5
Ever wanted to use your iPod like a USB stick? Ever wanted to add and remove songs/videos easily and without needing to synchronize with your PC's music library? Ever Tried SharePod?!
SharePod 3 is a lightweight music management program for your iPod. You can copy music and videos between your iPod and computers usually without having to install anything on the computer.
Since the first version was released 3 years ago, SharePod has been under constant revision and enhancement to keep up with Apple's changes and user requests. SharePod has been downloaded over a million times and won a Best Windows iPod Software (2005) award.
SharePod 3 is a huge leap ahead of the previous 2.x versions! Here are some of the main features:
- Redesigned interface
- Track tag editing
- Video import support
- iPod Shuffle support
- Drag and drop tracks to Explorer
- Playlists and ratings transferred to iTunes
- Completely rewritten codebase to safely import files to your iPod
- Play Count, Last Played Date support
- Volume Adjustment support
- Even faster loading/sorting time!
And whats more, SharePod 3 is completely free! Why pay for an application which provides fewer features or worse is bloated with 100s of unnecessary features? SharePod was designed from the start to be lightweight, quick and responsive, it has all (well hopefully most...!) of the features you need and none of the features you dont!
How to install SharePod
After downloading SharePod, extract the contents of the zip file to your iPod drive. Your iPod appears as a Removable Drive in My Computer when it is plugged in.
This version of SharePod will look for an iPod you run it from your computer's hard drive. However this makes loading slower as it can take some time to find the iPod drive.
Run SharePod.exe from the SharePod folder. If you receive an error message like 'Failed to initialize: 0xC0000135' or 'mscoree.dll not found', you need to download the Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0. Yes, it is about 20mb to download, but so many applications are written in .NET today, chances are you will need to download it at some point anyway! Note it is installed by default in Windows Vista.
Thats the only requirement. No more downloading, extracting and registering 3 or 4 different files :)
As with all iPod applications, be careful not to run SharePod and iTunes at the same time. Neither application will know about changes made by the other, and your iPod could get out of sync with both.
How to use SharePod
The screenshot on the right is the SharePod main window. On the left is the list of playlists. The first playlist (with the iPod icon) contains all the tracks on your iPod. It is called the Master playlist, and you cannot remove tracks from it.
Copying files to your Computer
To copy files (music/videos) from your iPod to your computer, there are several options.
* Select the files you want to copy, and click the 'Copy to PC' button at the top of the window.
* Select the files you want to copy, and drag them into Windows Explorer. :)
* Right click on a playlist and select 'Copy to PC'. This will copy all the files in the playlist.
* Right click on the iPod 'Master' playlist and select 'Copy to PC'. This will copy all the files in all playlists to your computer.
Importing into iTunes
SharePod creates XML files which iTunes can import (in iTunes, select File -> Import...). The file is always called SharePod_Itunes_Import.xml and is placed in the folder you copied your files to.
If you do a simple track copy, the tracks are placed in a 'SharePod' playlist in iTunes.
If you transferred a playlist (or playlists), then each playlist will be imported into iTunes with the same name as on the iPod.
If iTunes says it 'couldn't find all the files', check your music for non-standard characters, like accented characters (ÃÂÂ, ö, etc) as these will often cause problems for iTunes to import.
Copying files to your iPod
To copy files (music/videos) from your computer to your iPod, you can either drag files and folders from Windows Explorer into the Master playlist or click the 'Copy to iPod' button at the top of the window. Currently, only MP3, M4a and M4v files are supported. If you really want WAV file support, let me know.
SharePod checks that you dont copy the same tracks multiple times by checking for tracks currently on the iPod with the same Title, Artist and Album tags.
Once the tracks have been copied, SharePod filters the newly added tracks to make it easy to manually update any wrong tags. This behaviour is controllable in the Options window.
Playlists
Playlists are implemented in a much more intuitive way than in previous versions. To create a playlist, click the 'New Playlist' link in the bottom left of the window.
To add tracks to the new playlist, select 1 or more files in the track list, and drag them onto the playlist! Its that easy! To remove tracks from a playlist, select them, right click and select 'Remove from Playlist'.
To remove a playlist, select it and click 'Delete Playlist'. A dialog will ask you if you really want to delete the playlist, and whether to also delete the tracks in it.
If you choose not to delete the associated tracks, they will still be available in the Master playlist.
If you choose to delete the associated tracks, they will be deleted permanently from your iPod.
Tag Editing
SharePod 3.0 allows you to edit track tags such as Title, Artist, Genre, Volume Adjustment, Media Type etc. at any time.
To edit a single song, you may simply click in the cell you want to edit and start typing.
Note you need to first select the row, then click on the cell to edit. Be careful not to do this too quickly, as double-clicking on the row will play the file!
SharePod Media Player
SharePod (like previous versions) has a built-in media player.
To play a track, double click on it. The Media Player sidebar will display and start playing automatically. If the track is a video, SharePod opens it in your default player for that filetype. You can force SharePod to do this for all filetypes including music through the Options screen.
Sequential mode will start playing the next song in the Master list when the current song ends.
Random mode will randomly choose a track on the iPod and start playing it when the current song ends.
The Media Player is not affected by what is currently displayed in track list.
Options - Columns
To choose which columns to display, click the Options button at the top of the window. The Grid Columns tab in the Options window displays a list of the available columns. Check the box of each column you want SharePod to display. Note that the more columns you choose the smaller each column will be, and you will need a pretty big screen if you select all the columns! :)
Options - Restore iPod
You should never have to see this screen, but if Apple ever releases a change to their database format which breaks SharePod, its nice to know your protected!
If you experience problems connecting your iPod to iTunes after using SharePod, you can use SharePod's Restore iPod feature to restore your iPod to a working state. The number of backups stored is configurable in General Options and the backups are stored on the iPod so it can be restored from any computer.
SharePod makes only 1 backup per session (if changes are made) to avoid generating lots of useless backups.
Toolbar Buttons
Check Version
Clicking this will check the SharePod website for any new versions of SharePod. You should do this periodically as new versions contain new features and bugfixes.
Eject iPod
Clicking this will save any outstanding changes, send your iPod the 'disconnect' command and close SharePod. Occasionally SharePod appears to crash after it closes, this is safe to ignore - everything is saved and your iPod is disconnected by this time anyway.
